Building the AI Brain Behind Smart Grids

Sia helped a leading European distribution system operator develop an AI-powered DERMS by coordinating a consortium of industrial and technology partners and establishing an equally shared IP model to support international deployment and commercialization.

Context

Europe's energy landscape is transforming rapidly. The rise of renewables, battery systems, and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is redefining how electricity networks operate. Traditional centralized grids must now evolve into dynamic, intelligent systems capable of managing vast numbers of distributed energy resources (DERs).

In this context, Distributed Energy Resources Management Systems (DERMS) have become a strategic priority. These advanced control platforms allow grid operators to balance energy flows, ensure stability, and optimize distributed assets in real time.

A leading European distribution system operator (DSO) set out to design the next generation of such a system, leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance flexibility, reliability, and efficiency across its network and beyond.

Client Challenge

The DSO aimed to develop a comprehensive, future-ready control platform capable of:

  • Managing and optimizing distributed energy resources, including renewables, batteries, and EV-charging systems.
  • Establishing a collaborative innovation model through a consortium of specialized partners.
  • Creating a shared intellectual property framework enabling both Sia and the DSO to license the technology to other grid operators.
  • Preparing for global deployment and marketing, extending the solution's reach beyond the domestic grid.

What Sia Did

Sia took the lead in coordinating the innovation partnership, supported by a consortium of industrial and technology partners. Sia's mission: to develop an advanced AI-based Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS) that enhances the control of renewables, batteries, and EV charging systems. Through this partnership:

  • Sia secured a long-term framework for the development of the platform.
  • Intellectual property (IP) was shared equally between Sia and the DSO, enabling both to license the technology to other grid operators and ensuring balanced ownership and global licensing opportunities.
  • A development and implementation plan paved the way for international rollout and commercialization.

Results & Outlook

This collaboration marked the foundation of a long-term innovation effort to reshape electricity network management. The partnership aimed to deliver:

  • A next-generation AI software platform to control and optimize distributed energy resources across complex networks.
  • A shared IP model that enables both organizations to extend the technology to other grid operators worldwide.
  • A structured development and deployment roadmap, aligning research, implementation, and future commercialization.

By combining technical expertise, a long-term vision, and an equitable innovation model, Sia and its partners are laying the groundwork for smarter, more resilient, and globally adaptable energy networks.
