Job description

Location-New York, NY, New Jersey, Atlanta, GA or Remote

As the Billing Team Lead, you will report to the Head of Finance and act as a bridge between Finance and Operations. You will lead a team of billing agents whose work mirrors that of Project Accountants, overseeing the entire lifecycle of project financials—from time and material tracking to revenue recognition.

You will be responsible for ensuring that our billing is not only accurate and timely but also compliant with sophisticated accounting principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of billing agents, ensuring high performance in invoicing, project cost accounting, and cash application.
  • Project Accounting & Revenue Management: Oversee complex accounting tasks including Work in Progress (WIP) analysis, revenue cut-off procedures, and the management of revenue deferrals and accruals.
  • Data Integrity & Analysis: Review project data to spot discrepancies in billable time and expenses. Conduct deep-dive analyses to correct errors before they impact the P&L.
  • Consultant & Stakeholder Support: Act as the primary point of escalation for Billing Agents and Project Managers regarding contract terms, budget tracking, and complex billing inquiries.
  • Full Cycle Accounts Receivable: Oversee the AR function carried out by billing agents, including the accurate matching of cash receipts to invoices and the proactive clearing of aging AR.
  • System Optimization: Serve as the functional expert for our ERP system and ensure accurate and timely flow of information to our financial system (specifically Sage Intacct or similar).
  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve billing workflows, strengthen controls, and increase overall efficiency across the team

Qualifications

  • Experience: 5+ years of consulting industry experience
  • Leadership: Prior experience leading, mentoring, or coaching a team is preferred
  • Technical Accounting: Solid understanding of GAAP, specifically regarding revenue recognition, accruals, and project financial lifecycles.
  • Systems Expertise: Experience with Sage Intacct is highly preferred or similar.
  • Analytical Mindset: Strong ability to manipulate and interpret data; you should be the person who finds the "needle in the haystack" when reconciliations don't match
  • Communication: Ability to translate complex financial concepts to non-finance Project Managers and Consultants.
  • ERP and Commercial Experience Required *
